Victim ... Sylvester Stallone allegedly had his phone bugged by the private investigator / AFP
Anthony Pellicano, who defended himself, was convicted on 76 out of 77 charges after around two weeks of deliberations by a jury at the US District Court in Los Angeles.
The 64-year-old "private eye to the stars" had been accused of bugging the phones of several celebrities including Sylvester Stallone as well carrying out illegal background checks using police records.
One of Pellicano`s co-defendants, former Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant Mark Arneson, was also convicted.
Pellicano was first arrested in 2002 after a probe involving one of his former clients, action star Steven Seagal.
Agents searching the sleuth`s offices discovered two grenades and a quantity of plastic explosive. He later served a 30-month prison sentence for weapons offences before being indicted for racketeering and conspiracy.
Pellicano`s trial had been the subject of intense speculation within the entertainment world, with industry figures reported to be nervous about what the private eye`s court case may bring into the public domain.
But although the trial saw appearances from comedians Chris Rock and Garry Shandling as well as movie industry figures including Paramount chief Brad Grey and former Disney president Michael Ovitz, there were few major revelations.
