TONY Mokbel`s girlfriend Danielle McGuire is living it up in a luxury beachfront apartment while her jailed lover is receiving taxpayer-funded legal aid.
The Sunday Herald Sun found Ms McGuire at an exclusive Albert Park apartment complex touted as a "boutique building located on Melbourne`s premier beachfront boulevard".
Ms McGuire`s home - advertised at $590 rent a week with a $3000 bond - includes a gymnasium, steam room and heated outdoor lap pool.
While Mokbel pleads poverty, Ms McGuire, mother of his daughter Renate, sends her older daughter to an exclusive Brighton girls` school and drives a $40,000 Ford Territory.
When the Sunday Herald Sun caught up with her this week, the blonde was wearing what appeared to be a solitaire diamond on her left ring finger, prompting speculation she may be engaged.
Ms McGuire was jailed for three years with an 18-month minimum in May 2002 for trafficking drugs and possessing illegal drugs. In July 2006, she fled to Greece and lived with Mokbel while he was on the run.
Revelations about her lavish lifestyle have prompted questions over how it is being funded and by who.
The mother of two is not believed to have a job.
Authorities have so far seized an estimated $55 million in assets from Mokbel and his associates.
But police estimated more than 80 per cent of the Mokbel family`s assets were "buried in someone`s backyard", a Purana taskforce detective told a Melbourne court.
The owners of Ms McGuire`s apartment are believed not to have known she was living there, because a man - whose name is not known - signed the lease in recent months.
When approached by the Sunday Herald Sun this week, Ms McGuire drove away in her 4WD.
Mokbel has been granted legal aid to defend two murder charges and a series of drugs charges.
Victoria Legal Aid managing director Bevan Warner said de facto couples were considered financially associated, but would not comment on Mokbel or Ms McGuire.
